Grandmaster Charles Ferraro

Grandmaster (Korean: Kwan Jang Nim) Charles Ferraro has studied many types of martial art systems over the years, including: Tang Soo Do Karate, Shoto Kan Karate, Kempo Karate, Goju Ryu Karate, Jiujutsu, Aikido and Kenjitsu.

He has also trained in Filipino martial arts (Kali, Arnis and Escrima), Okinawa weapons (Kobudo), Tai Chi Chuan and natural healing (Reiki).

Grandmaster earned his B.S. degree in Biology (SCSU/ 1974) and his M.S. in Fishery Biology  (Murray State University/ 1975) .


Tang Soo Do


Tang Soo Do has always been Grandmaster Ferraro's first love, and he continues training and teaching it to this day.  Grandmaster  began his studies in Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan in 1967 under Mr. Robert Cheezic. After the formation of the U. S. Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation in 1976, he became a student of Master Hyun Chul Hwang, son of Grandmaster Hwang Kee of the Tang Soo Do Moo Duk Kwan Federation.

Grandmaster Ferraro opened his first Dojang (school)  in 1976 in New Haven, CT, under the name of New England Tang Soo Do Academy. After moving his Dojang to West Haven, CT in 1978, he decided to change the name of his school to West Haven Academy of Karate, Achievement Centers. At the time of this writing Grandmaster Ferraro and his students have opened eighteen Dojangs in four states.

He has trained and promoted over 800 individuals to the Dan (black belt) level and over 50 individuals to the Master level. In competition h
is students have garnished over 450 individual first place championships, 35 individual National Grand Championships and 4 individual first place international championships.


Mi Guk Kwan

Grandmaster is the founder and president of  the Tang Soo Do Mi Guk Kwan Association

On December 9th 1995 fifty-nine of Grandmaster Ferraro's senior students and studio owners held a historic meeting where it was decided by unanimous vote to form a new martial arts organization. 

At this inaugural meeting the Tang Soo Do Mi Guk Kwan (Korean: "A brotherhood, school, and place in America to practice the way of the empty hand defense") was formed with Grandmaster Ferraro as its president.

Under the guidance of Grandmaster Ferraro the Tang Soo Do Mi Guk Kwan has developed into one of the largest Tang Soo Do organizations in the world, with thirty studio locations within the United States, nine  in South America, ten  in Central America and one location in India.
